Victory at the Vic. Posted 20th Nov 2011...

It has been the scene of countless sporting battles down the years but the biggest in its history is now set to come to an end with the right result.
The sporting future of the Victory Ground in Bury St Edmunds is set to be secured for generations to come thanks to a £2 million cash injection as part of a council sale to the community. After several years of negotiations, current land owners St Edmundbury Borough Council have revealed they are now prepared to sell off the lease to a community group who plan to gave the out-dated facilities a major facelift, subject to councillors rubber-stamping the proposal at a cabinet meeting next week.
The new facilities, which already have architects drawing and which the Free Press has learned could be completed by 2013 if given the green light, would see:An increase in the number of sports and participation at the Victory Ground. A new 5,000sq ft cricket pavilion, giving Bury’s cricket club a home to rival the best in East Anglia and help attract more top-level matches – such as when England captain Alastair Cook visited with Essex last summer. The Victory Ground become a centre of excellence for girls’ and women’s cricket. Indoor sports hall for South Lee School as well as community sports clubs such as badminton and basketball. Four plush new changing rooms for the many teams, including footballers, who currently play there.
The former Greene King-owned grounds have been leased to community group Victory Sports Ground Limited by the council since 2001. But the freehold would transfer fully to the entity – incorporating Bury Cricket Club, South Lee School and Sporting 87 FC – as a community interest company (who use profits for public use), subject to next Wednesday’s council meeting. The move would finally pave the way for long-held plans to be put in action, as the current short-term lease means the uncertain future of the grounds has prevented grants, particularly from the England Cricket Board, being released.
Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club chairman Paul Whittaker, helping spearhead the bid as chairman of Victory Sports Ground Limited, said: “In order for us to make the necessary investment to build new facilities we need the security we get from owning the land.” If the move to sell the land is approved, as recommended, at the cabinet meeting next week, Victory Sports Ground Limited will then proceed with a planning application to begin rejuvenating the existing run-down facilities. “We have already done a lot of the design work and we have raised the necessary finance to complete the project,” added Whittaker. “We have been trying to get this project up-and-running now for more than two years.”
First team manager of football team Sporting 87, Jonathan Warnock, who has moved the side to the Victory Ground with the long-term aim of being able to prove they have the facilities to allow them to move up to the Suffolk & Ipswich League Senior Division (presently in Division Two), said: “The pitch facilities have always been excellent and to have changing facilities to match that will help all the clubs progress. I think it is brilliant for Bury. What it does is secures that facility. We are losing too many sporting facilities.” South Lee School, which sits across the road, is set to pump £1.5 million of their own funds into the project, with the ground set to be sold at an unspecified market value.
Vice chairman of South Lee School of Governors, David Barker, hailed the “superb facility” that would be available for pupils and the community. Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, John Griffiths, added: “I strongly support this initiative which puts a local community firmly in charge of a much valued local facility. There will also, and importantly, be legal protection to ensure its future as a sports ground and I hope my cabinet colleagues will approve the idea which makes so much sense for all concerned.”

Division Eight - Regionalised group for 2012: West: Battisford; Brockley II; Bury St. Edmunds IV; Elveden; Haverhill III; Lakenheath II; Nowton; Walsham-le-Willows; and Worlington II

End of Season Review. Posted 27th Sept 2011...

Looking back over the season we have finished a highly creditable 5th in the East Anglian Premier League, considering the loss from 2010 of 4 experienced players all capable of big scores this was a great achievement.

Tom Huggins performed remarkably well being the 4th highest batsman (766 runs) and 8th best wicket taker (35 wickets at 19.09 at just 2.65 per over) Justin Bishop has had an excellent season with the bat scoring 617 runs that included 3 centuries, his bowling has been curtailed due to his knee but still achieved 22 wickets. Tom Rash has been rewarded for his dedication and hard work that earned him a Suffolk place, he took 33 wickets at an averge of 20.15. Simon Rees scored 407 runs including some important innings. Phil Edwards returned to the club this season and bowled well giving little away in terms of runs.

The opportunity to have Essex player Chris Wright was taken up and he played in 7 games and was a great influence on and off the pitch in particular with so many young players being involved. Chris took 18 wickets at an averge of 15 and scored some valuable runs, in fact for the last month of the season he came close to helping Warwickshire win the County Championship taking 22 wickets for them. Mark Nunn bowled well for his 22 wickets and proved invaluable with his runs that helped consolidate the 2nd team late season.

The main achievement at 1st XI level is the young players who have made their mark, Toby Adams scored 241 runs in his first season, Tom Robotham established himself at this level and James Sturgeon who played the first 3 matches for the 2nd team kept wicket to a standard that improved as the season continued and achieved a superb count of 25 dismissals (22 ct and 3 st). A number of other players made a significant contribution in a season when Bury progressed, at times lack of experience was clear but the foundation of a very good side exists.

The 2nd X1 finished just below half way in the 2 Counties Division 3 the problem of availability was evident on many occasions but there were several highlights Ali Douglas batted well with Mark Nunn, Hugo Rynsard-Perry and Ben Bellward all amongst the runs on a regular basis. Tom Robotham improved as the season went on to earn a 1st team spot his 21 wickets made a difference with Vivek (18) Matt Prested (16) and Paul Douglas (13) contributing. The side was captained by Nick Curran who swapped places with Simon Aldous for the final third of the season.

The 3rd XI started very well but as availability became a problem the side lost momentum. Kevin Dobson was well supported by John Nicoll in leading the side and they along with Pete Thearle and Phil Scherb were good run scorers the individual highlight was Phil Godden's 142 not out at Maldon. Jon Hayes was the leading wicket taker with good support from Ashley Smith, Toby Nunn, Vivek and Frank Stennett.

We entered a 4th team in the 2 Counties Division 9 with the aim of bringing senior cricket to the clubs promising young players thanks to the captaincy of Simon Aldous and latterly Nick Curran the side has been a success, often pitched against experienced teams the young players played to their ability unsurprisingly Aldous and Curran were the leading run scorers with Alex Urquart and Marc Daly also making useful contributions. Simon Aldous took 18 wickets the rest were shared around.

The real stars were the young players Joe Tasker, Will Rout, Tom and Ben Curran, Sam Harrison, Ben Whittaker, Tom Baistow, Harvey Finbow, Chris Lewis, Josh Ruthven and several others who experienced senior cricket for the first time, when we look at today's 1st X1 3 of the players were playing at 3rd team level 2 years ago the reality is Bury St Edmunds are looking very much to the future, it is important to have players at all levels playing and enjoying the game, for 2011 we need to build on the positives but have a constructive look at how as a club we move forward and make improvements.

Bury St Edmunds 177 all out (54.3 overs)

The game was played on an alternative pitch as recent heavy rain had run under the covers on the original pitch. The pitch took a lot of spin making batting difficult.

Tom Huggins (39) got Bury St Edmunds off to a good start before being bowled by a ball which kept very low. Scott Harvey (27) batted with application particularly against Clacton's overseas spinner Stefanus Gerike but at 113 for 6 Bury were not in a good position. However James Sturgeon (22) and James McKinney (17 not out) ensured that the last four wickets added 54 runs to reach an all out total of 177. Former Bury player Ben France taking 5.56.

Clacton 168 all out (59.1 overs)Bury's bowlers all bowled accurately and were backed up by some lively fielding and were taking Clacton wickets at regular intervals but could not dislodge opener Garth Davson and at 150 for 6 Clacton looked favourites. Tom Huggins still had overs to bowl and the batsmen were finding his spinners virtually unplayable. Huggins eventually induced Gavson (81) to mishit to midwicket into the safe hands of Simon Rees and then trapped the final two batsmen LBW, the final wicket coming on the first ball of the final over. The Bury fielding was outstanding with Harvey and Sasha Ward making several vital stops, Huggins took 6 for 26 from 17.1 overs, including two quickfire stumpings by James Sturgeon, and did not concede a single boundary.

A terrific win as Bury achieved the maximum 30 points to consolidate 5 th place in the EAPL.

Burys 2nd XI were at home to Clactons 2nd team, won the toss and invited the visitors to bat, the star performer with the ball was Paul Douglas with figures of 15.8.37.6. Mark Nunn took 2 wickets and Vivek one as botton club Clacton were all out for 97.

The Bury reply started well with Phil Godden continuing his good form as he made 14 in a first wicket stand of 43 with Mark Nunn, there followed excellent bowling by Clacton's R.Singh who completed a hat-rick of wickets as Bury plumeted to 55.5 however Mark Nunn (57 not out) stood firm with captain Simon Aldous as this welcome win took Bury to mid table in a game of just 54 overs.

Bury's 3rd team short of regular players travelled to Kelvedon and Feering and were outclassed by their more experienced opponents, the home side racked up 387.2 with W.Shortridge (213 not out) and M.Wilde (100 not out) scoring an unbeaten 346 for the third wicket. Bury battled on scored 142 thanks mainly to 84 from captain Kevin Dobson well supported by Tom Curry with 27.

Bury's 4th team recorded a welcome win away to West Bergholt, the team was assembled thanks to a great effort by captain Nick Curran, although one player short they restricted the home side to 153 Will Rout taking 3.22 and Chalie Johnson 3.31., Bury scored the runs for the loss of just 2 wickets with William Earle (62 not out) and Steve Rout (59 not out)

On Sunday Sudbury hosted a superb match between Suffolk's two Premier Clubs, a game that reflected a real sporting spirit with some high quality cricket. Bury batted first and captain Mark Nunn carried on from the day before with a superb 130, James McKinney (29) Adam Kizis (19) and Tom Robotham (21) helped ensure a score of 233. J.Poulson 3.45 and Darren Batch 2.25 were the main wicket takers.

Sudbury looked as if they might achieve the target but fell just 12 runs short, their Sri Lankan international Fernando making 76 with useful support from Poulson (37) and Batch (41)

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Huggins, Mark Nunn, Paul Douglas, Kevin Dobson, Nick Curran and James McKinney.

Next week is the last of the season Bury are at home to Halstead in the EAPL, the 2nd XI travel to Halstead 2nd XI, the 3rd team are at home to Frinton 2nds and the 4th X1 are away to Elveden.

On Sunday as league games are complete the club will be holding an interclub 6 aside competition at the Victory Ground starting  at 12 noon, if any readers would like to come along please join us, you maybe thinking about playing again or like the idea of playing on the same ground as Alistair Cook and Ravi Bopara last May. Bury entertained EAPL leaders Cambridge Granta to the Victory Ground on Saturday on a day the ball dominated and often batting was not of the highest quality. Bury batted first with the ball seaming around and lost wickets at regular intervals Tom Huggins top scored with 48 and although players made a start Scott Harvey (19) Toby Adams (18) James McKinney (13) it was left to Sasha Ward to remain unbeaten on 20 with help from Tom Robotham (10) at the final wicket, the general feeling was that 169 was around 30 runs short of where the side needed to be and so it proved. Granta had to fight all the way at 11.2. Bury were in with a chance 119.5. at tea left 51 runs to be scored and at 161.8. Bury nearly finished them off but it was a tight game as the EAPL leaders won in the 51st over with 2 wickets to spare. Tom Rash bowled well with 3.33 and Phil Edwards with 2.43.

There were several positives from this young Bury side Tom Robotham's bowling, Sasha Ward's batting and James Sturgeon behind the stumps with 2 catches and a stumping to make it 21 dismissals in the EAPL in a season he started in the 2nd team.

Bury's 2nd XI lost away to Copford the home side batted well despite good bowling from Mark Nunn, Vivek and Rob Pryke. 303 was always going to be a big task and at 8.3. Bury were effectively out of the game Phil Scherb (33) Simon Aldous (27) Adam Kizis (49) and Sam Cordell (31) batted to a total of 197.

The most memorable performance of the weekend and possibly the season was that of Phil Godden for the 3rd XI away to Maldon 2nds. Bury had only 10 players but bowled and fielded extremely well Jon Hayes and John Nicoll taking 2 wickets each as the home side were contained for 235.

It needed an outstanding innings and so it proved, Kevin Dobson described Phil Godden's batting as the finest he had witnessed in many a year (and there are many) he said on the ground Alistair Cook made his name Godden scored a faultless 142 even in the penultimate over with 14 needed he scored 3 x 4s leaving Tom Curry to score the winning runs in a game all Bury players excelled.

The 4th team batted first against an experienced Elveden side and considering the inexperience and the good track did well to maintain their discipline and composure to contain the visitors to 297.8. Opener Flack scored a hundred well supported by Lambert.

Alex Thurkettle and Rob Johnson made a good start but the run rate was always going to be too much. Young Chris Lewis batted very well for 33 and Nick Curran scored a good 50 much to the acclaim of the 1st team players watching, 195.8. was a decent score from a side made up of mostly of promising young players.

Bury Ladies played a Twenty/20 match away to Mistley the home side achieved 123 with excellent bowling from Esme Covington-Cross (4.1.8.4.) despite a sound 26 from Angela Jiggins Bury finished on 116.

The Sunday game against Woolpit was rained off with Bury in a strong position at 190.5. Phil Scherb having scored 123 and James Sturgeon 35.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Phil Godden, Tom Huggins, Nick Curran and Esme Covington-Cross.

Next week the 1st XI are away to Clacton the 2nd XI at home to Clacton 2nds, the 3rd XI are away to Kelvedon and Feering 2nds and the 4th XI away to West Bergholt. On Sunday the 1st XI are away to Sudbury.

Bury Sunday 2nds 208 Walsham Le Willows 60.

An excellent performance by Burys Sunday 2nd XI made promotion from the Hunts Bats Division 5 almost certain. This is a league where we played 6 teams twice and the other 6 teams once, as Brandon dropped out both matches against them were removed.

Batting first at Culford School Raj lead the way with 59 well supported by Adam Blackmore (41) Gupta (19) and Tom Curran (19) George and Newman each took 3 wickets for the visitors. Gupta with 6.21. was the star performer with the ball.

On Saturday two games were completed at the Victory Ground despite interruptions for rain. The EAPL game at Vauxhall Mallards was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The 2nd XI lost with just 4 balls remaining in a very close encounter with Kelvedon and Feering Bury scored 139.8 with Adam Kizis top scoring in reply the visitors just achieved the target with 7 wickets down in the final over Mark Nunn taking 3 wickets.

The 3rd XI started well against a strong Witham side with good bowling from Guy Shalev and Frank Stennett but Jenkinson (74) and Headley (69) mastered the damp conditions it a final total of 205.6.

Bury's reply proved a struggle against good bowling, Kevin Dobson top scored with 21 not out finishing on 94.9.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Raj and Gupta.

Next Saturday Cambridge Granta visit the Victory Ground with aspirations of winning the EAPL. The 2nd XI visit Copford and 3rd XI travel to Maldon. The 4th XI are at home to Elveden.

On Sunday the Ist XI are at home to Woolpit.

A remarkable weekend for Bury St Edmunds as we won 6 of the 7 games scoring 1325 runs conceding 782.

The 1st XI at home to Horsford lost Tom Huggins in the first over and had a difficult morning in damp conditions at one stage being 90.5.Justin Bishop making 19, Toby Adams 25 and Simon Rees 31, they were in trouble but Essex player Chris Wright and Sasha Ward (29) battled well adding 67 for the 6th wicket Wright top scored with 54 and Tom Rash remained 20 not out as rain ended the innings on 197.7. This left the visitors 198 to score from 47 overs but wickets fell at regular intervals Phil Edwards claiming the first and Chris Wright produced a hostile spell that had the batsman hopping about, his figures of 13.2.29.4. were complimented by Tom Huggins whose spin achieved 14.4 2.45.5. Wright had to be removed from the attack for fear of the game being abandoned for bad light but Huggins took the final wicket thanks to Sasha Ward's second excellent catch, the win lifted Bury to 5 th in the EAPL and with games against Vauxhall Mallards and Cambridge Granta to come the team will have a big say in the destiny of the EAPL title.

Bury's 2nd XI batted first at Coggershall, Mark Nunn scored a very good hundred, Olly Magnus a solid 50. complimented by good hitting at the end from Pete Thearle and James Lofts.  The innings was interrupted by rain, and a lot of time was lost.  Coggeshall were very sporting in continuing with the game, the weather improved and we had only 2 and half hours left in this time Ethan Wright removed the first 3 batsmen for just 8 runs but the star bowler was James McKinney with 5.31 as Coggershall were all out for 102.in a good fielding and bowling performance.

Bury 3rd X1travelled to Gt Bromley, Bury won the toss and decided to field first. Opening bowlers Toby Nunn & Rob Pryke bowled a very controlled opening spell and runs were hard to come by for the opposition's opening batsmen's.Pryke got the initial break through. John Hayes came on to bowl first change and within a couple of over's he removed the other opening batsmen, with some fine swing bowling he claimed 5 wickets in total. Javed Inman bowled a very controlled spell and frustrated the Bromley Batsmen. There was also a very tidy display of wicket keeping from young George Broughton.  Bromley were restricted to 189 runs on a small

ground.

Bury stated there innings and lost some early wicket before Owen Grizby at number 5 Joined opening batsman Phil Scherb, and the pair shared an attacking partnership before Scherb was dismissed for 67.  Grizby went on to produce a well constructed innings of 72 n.o. which saw Bury reach their winning target in just 35 over's.

Due to a quirk in the Division 9 fixtures Bury 4th XI found themselves playing promotion chasing Nowton for the second week running. Bury won the toss and chose to bat which following a half century partnership between Ben Curran (23) & Nick Curran and at 90-3 off 25 overs seemed like a reasonable decision however the loss of Nick Curran just as it started to drizzle triggered a batting collapse which left the home side at 100-8. A couple of lusty blows from Charlie Johnson (19 not out), making his return to the club,  took Bury up to 134. A point of note is that the spirit of cricket was very much alive and kicking in this match as Nowton withdrew an appeal as a Bury batsman trudged off having been given out something rarely seen at any level of cricket let alone by a team desperate for every point they can get to achieve promotion. After tea and a break for rain Nowton achieved their target but the guile and variation of Frank Stennett (3.31) supported by an excellent fielding display made the visitors battle all the way it was ex Bury player Lauren Kretzman with 76 not out that proved the difference but Bury's young team can be proud of their efforts none more so than 13 year old Ben Curran and 16 year old bowlers Sam Harrison and Charlie Johnson.

The newly formed Bury St Edmunds Ladies team continued their winning ways with a 23 run win over Maldon away. The home side struggled to remove the opening pair of Cheryl Clayton and Esme Covington-Cross who scored 91 before Clayton was run out on 31. Despite Maldon taking two wickets in the last 2 overs Bury finished with 129 for 3. Maldon made an aggressive start in reply but the younger side lost regular wickets and failed to make the necessary run rate, finishing short on 106 for 7. Angela Jiggins took 3 for 15 but County U15 player Covington-Cross was Player of the Match with 17 runs and, bowling figures of 4-0-8-1.

On Sunday our 1st XI played Acton and scored 238.6 Phil Scherb (51) Toby Adams (73) and James Mckinney (48) leading the way the visitors were all out for 104 Tom Robotham taking 2 wickets and Alex Thurkettle and Mark Nunn 3 each.

The Sunday 2nd XI were away to Acton 2nd XI Frank Stennett (31) and Chris Honeyball put on 50 for the first wicket and good support was given from Charlie Johnson (31 not out) and Adam Kizis (39) as Bury achieved a total of 195.9. The bowling of Gupta proved the turning point as his 5.24 took the game away from the home side Simon Thearle's remarkable over that resulted in 3 wickets and Bob Steward claimed the final wicket in a total of 92.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Chris Wright, Tom Huggins, Mark Nunn, James McKinney, Jon Hayes, Owen Grisby, Ben Curran, Esme Covington-Cross,  Toby Adams and Gupta.

Next week the 1st XI are away to Vauxhall Mallards the 2nd XI are at home to Kelvedon and Feering the 3rd XI are at home to Witham 2nd XI no 4th team game. On Sunday our home 2nd XI match against Walsham le Willows is at Culford School as the Victory Ground hosts the Suffolk Cup Finals.

Bury entertained Sudbury in the EAPL on Saturday, won the toss and asked Sudbury to bat in damp overcast conditions, on a track where runs were always going to be difficult, the first wicket going down to Phil Edwards with the first ball of the game, wickets fell regularly with Fernando applying himself well for 49, Ben Reece gave support in a final total of 121. Chris Wright (3.31) Tom Rash (3.37) and Edwards (2.21) were helped by two run outs.

Bury started well with Chris Wright (25) and Tom Huggins scoring 51 for the first wicket but there followed a major batting collapse as no Bury player could stem the bowling of Fernando (5.35) who used swing and seam to great effect and was assisted by Suffolk player Matt Hunn and spinner Ben Reece. Bury were all out for 101 leaving Huggins stranded on 48.

Bury's 2nd XI travelled to Stowmarket and put up an excellent show scoring 223.5 Phil Godden top scored with 60 with excellent contributions from Hugo Rynsard-Perry (58) James McKinney (37) and James Lofts (35).Stowmarkets overseas professional Madanayaka scored 62 but the Bury bowlers put up a good performance having the home side at 184.9. at the close.

Bury St Edmunds won the toss and elected to bat and built their innings around Scott Harvey (75) who shared substantial partnerships with Justin Bishop (45) and Chris Wright (54). Harvey achieved his highest premier league score with a well balanced innings before an uncharacteristic shot saw him bowled by Ashley Watson (5 for 43). Not for the first time this season Bury found it difficult to score quickly against spin bowling in a final total of 247.9.

In reply Bury's bowlers started well with Norwich only scoring 17 from the first ten overs. Two wickets in his first two overs by Justin Bishop (2 for 31) reduced Norwich to 100 for 5;at that stage Norwich looked out of the contest, but ex Norwich footballer Chris Sutton (47) joined Harry Bush (80) and some positive batting revived the Norwich innings until Phil Edwards trapped Bush LBW. Chris Wright (3 for 58) took the next two wickets, but Norwich survived the final 8 overs finishing on 227.8. As the match was drawn.

No 2nd XI game but the 3rd XI travelled to Harwich and Dovercourt and for a change played in calm conditions Peter Thearle top scored with 31 and useful condributions came from Simon Aldous and Phil Godden. The home side despite losing early wickets batted well, Bury lost Green to injury but wickets from Sam Cordell and Adam Kizis were not enough to prevent the home side winning by 5 wickets.

On Sunday our 1st XI game was cancelled as Edwardston could not raise a team, a pity as this is the second time in recent weeks this has happened.

The Sunday 2nd XI played Stowupland who were bowled out for 142 John Domino taking 4.20 in reply the Bury opening batsman played exceptionally well Raj scoring 102 and Adam Kizis 40 as they won by 10 wickets.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Scott Harvey, Chris Wright John Domino and Raj.

Bury St Edmunds 1st XI won comprehensively at Burwell the stage was set by excellent batting, despite losing Tom Huggins for 29 with the score on 44 Justin Bishop then put on 145 runs with Scott Harvey (45) Bishop went on to make his 3rd century of the season and was finally out for 126. Simon Rees remained 53 not out who along with Mark Nunn (37 not out from 20 balls) in a superb total of 315.6 off 63 overs.

The Burwell innings was effectively blown away by Essex player Chris Wright  and Phil Edwards along with three outstanding slip catches by Tom Huggins and at 36.6. the match was effectively over, Mark Nunn came into the attack to reduce Burwell to 78.8. but as the ball lost its shine and hardness batting became easier Ethan Wright and Nunn took the final wickets as Bury won by 119 runs.

Bury's 2nd XI lost at home to Mildenhall the visitors posted 265.6 with some sound batting from their openers (Grindley 91 and ?? with 70) and Bury never really competed despite Richard Pineo and Hugo Rynsard-Perry batting well in a total of 179.7.

The 3rd team travelled to Brightlingsea and were invited to bat on a damp track, Andrew Green batted very well for 49 with good support from Raj and young Ben Curran. However despite having the home side at 65.5 the middle order batsman saw them win in a tight encounter.

On Sunday just one fixture as our Sunday 1st XI hosted Haverhill and scored 222.7 which included a superb 102 from James McKinney with Mark Nunn adding 37. Haverhill were all out for 178 with Tom Robotham taking 3.37.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Justin Bishop, Andrew Green and James McKinney.

Bury's encounter with EAPL leaders Swardeston was abandoned without a ball bowled on a Saturday of a cricketing washout.

On Sunday we were fortunate to play two local sides both of whom play the game with spirit and true sportsmanship.

Too often teams look at the heavens and take the easy options but we played opponents who are there to play the game despite adverse weather something of a rarity these days.

Our 1st XI travelled to Lakenheath with whom we have had many excellent encounters and this was no exception, on a difficult wicket the home side batted first and were all out for 57 in 22.3 overs G.Palmer top scored with 19 and the bowling was spear headed by Tom Robotham (4.18) and young Ben Curran (4.7) Alex Blackmore and Mark Nunn taking the other wickets.

Lakenheath have a good bowling attack with ex Bury players Danny Reynolds (4.19) and A.Horrex (2.28) but Mark Nunn battled well with 22 to lead his team home in a game that was a credit to all taking place.

A similar spirit prevailed at the Victory Ground as remarkably 70 overs were bowled as frank Stennett lead his table topping side to another win.

Rougham 2nd XI gave an excellent account of themselves none more than N.Barrett who carried his bat for 70 runs in a total of 188.6 Gupta (2.18) and Stennett (2.33) were the main wicket takers.

Despite being off 3 times for rain the players battled on Alex Urquhart scored 39 but it was left to the two players who really do not like running between the wickets to steer Bury home Raj was 59 not out with 3x6's and 7x4's and Pete Thearle 52 not out that included 4x6's and 5x4's.

Well done to everyone involved the spirit of cricket was well and truly in force in both games. Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Robotham, Ben Curran, Raj and Pete Thearle.

Next week the 1st XI travel to Burwell the 2nd XI are at home to Mildenhall 2nd XI and the 3rd Xi are away to Brightlingsea 2nds.

On Sunday the 1st XI are at home to Haverhill.

The second half of the EAPL season started in disappointing fashion with defeat at Great Witchingham, all the more so after Bury had bowled themselves into a strong position, just after lunch the home side were 107.8 but failure to finish off the innings cost us dear.

The final total of 183 was achieved as the tail enders rode their luck despite useful contributions from Tom Rash (3.34) Mark Nunn (3.52) and Phil Edwards (2.35) Bury's batsman never really look up to the task although Tom Rash (42) Tom Huggins (27) and Toby Adams (20) made useful contributions as we ended 34 runs short.

The 2nd XI gave the unbeaten league leaders Worlington a decent game at the Victory ground Bury batted first and lost 4 early wickets including Nick Curran for 19, but James Lofts decided to take the match to the visitors in a positive way with an excellent 60 that included 3x6s and 5x4s. Ben Bellward added 24 in a 5th wicket stand of 80, however the Bury tail folded against some good bowling.

The league leaders did not have it all there own way as 5 wickets fell Adam Kizis (2.17) and Viveck (3.30) were the pick of the bowlers but Sands (50) and Craig Eastlea (42 not out) steered Worlington to the target.

Burys 3rd XI fought hard against Aberton, Pete Thearle who gave typical robust performance that cost the home side two lost balls in an innings of 109 Cordell (27) and James Berry (24) were the only main support. Bury had Abberton 45.5 but the home side middle order re grouped and with 9 wickets down the game was there to be won but the game ended in defeat.

Bury's 4th XI were soundly beaten by Woodbridge early in the season but thanks to Raj this time made a game of it, Raj is not someone too keen on running between the wickets hence a score of 70 that included 6x6s and 6x4s, it is a good job South Lee  School Speech day was two days later as the ball entered the marquee erected for the occasion! Woodbridge won with 3 wickets down but youngsters Joe Tasker (2.26) and Tom Curran (1.20) showed promise.

On Sunday a keen and sporting encounter in Hunts Bats Division 1, Mildenhall were keen to make up for last weeks loss and batted first scoring 235.7 off 40 overs Finnes ended 49 not out and Tom Rash (3.64) and Mark Nunn (2.19)

The Bury reply reached 216.9 Rash scoring 73 and Hugo Rynsard-Perry 46, A.Young with 3.41 lead the home charge.

Bury Sunday 2nds played a weakened Mellis 2nd team batted first and scored 250 leaving the visitors well short of the target.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Rash,James Lofts, Pete Thearle, and Raj.

Next week we host EAPL leaders Swardeston, the 2nd XI are away to Felixstowe, the 3rd XI at Boxtead and the 4th team at home to Sudbourne Hall.

On Sunday the Ist Xi travel to Lakenheath and the 2nd XI are at home to Rougham 2nds.

Every season we seem to have one nightmare selection week and for Bury last Saturday proved the case. All credit to all who worked hard to ensure 4 teams turned out.

A depleted 1st XI travelled to Halstead and were asked to field and in fact put up on an excellent show to have the home side at 128.8 Tom Rash taking 4.52 Simon Rees 2.44 and Tom Huggins 3.17. The last two wickets added 40 runs that in the final analysis proved the difference.

Bury lost Toby Adams early on but Tom Huggins batted well for 44 but losing 3 quick wickets at 66.5 was critical, despite excellent batting by Ollie Huggins and Mark Nunn the latter was unlucky to be run out on 17 with the score on 112 after adding 46 runs, Ollie Huggins scored an impressive 32 but the difference proved to be the home side Bangladeshi International Syed Rasd with 4.47. Who after the game returned to join his national side.

Bury 2nds bowled first at home to Halstead's 2nd team  who got off to a good start with opener Cooper getting 51. Tom Robotham continued to show what an improved player he is with 13.1.36.4 he was well supported by Matt Prested with 3.56 in a total of 180.8 off 45 overs.

Bury batted with determination lead from the front by Alistair Douglas he received good support from Ben Bellward (23) Joe Nicol (21) and Sam Cordell (23) but Douglas finished on 54 not out and ran out of partners as his side were 20 runs short.

The 3rd XI with a number of young players visited Frinton who batted first and scored 328, R.Everson top scored with 142 and J Baker made a quick 70, Bury were well short despite John Nicol (32) and Tom Currey with 34 however there were some promising performances from Currey, Matt Fildes and Cameron Crabtree.

Bury's 4th XI was entered to Division 9 to give some of our young players a first taste of senior cricket although of Saturday many of the youngsters were playing at a higher level, West Bergholt are at the basement and were pleased to have a fairly even game scoring 211, Joe Tasker taking 3.34 and Simon Aldous 5.64.

The foundation of the Bury reply centred on Marc Daley who scored a magnificent 109 he was supported by Ben Curran (19) Alex Thurkettle (27 not out) and Simon Aldous (30 not out) for the second win of the season, West Bergholt appreciated the hospitality and had a decent game of cricket.

On Sunday the 1st XI hosted Mildenhall and batted first and were up against a good bowling side Joe Reed took 4.33 and Ben Tippett 5.49 in a Bury score of 175 Mark Nunn top scored with 41 and Ollie Huggins made 33. The Mildenhall reply never really got going Alex Blackmore (3.25) Tom Rash (3.9) and Tom Robotham (2.3) bowled them out for 82.

A friendly fixture with an old fashioned declaration took place on the 2nd pitch Anan Desai top scored for Bury with 48 in a total of 211 off 38 overs. Wicken won with 5 wickets down but again Joe Tasker and Ton Currey showed great promise.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Rash, Ollie Huggins, Tom Huggins, Alistair Douglas, Tom Robotham, Marc Daley, Simon Aldous and Tom Currey.

Next week is the second half of the season the 1st XI are away to Great Witchingham, 2nds are at home to Worlington the 3rds away to Abberton 2nds the 4th XI at home to Woodbridge 2nds.

On Sunday the Ist XI travel to Mildenhall and the 2nd XI are at home to Mellis 2nd XI.

Bury St Edmunds consolidated a top five place in the EAPL with a win over Clacton on Saturday, the Bury XI was made up of 7 players who had learned their cricket at the club, while many other premier league clubs rely on outside sources this season 8 teenage players of great promise have represented the club.

Tom Huggins captained the side in Justin Bishop's absence, Clacton were invited to bat and were soon in trouble as Phil Edwards produced his best bowling spell since returning to the club taking all 4 early wickets with the score at just 35, Mark Nunn, Huggins and Simon Rees each took a further wicket before Tom Rash dismissed the tail with 3.13.

Clacton were all out for 135 but the Bury reply that started well with 33 for the first wicket stuttered along Huggins was stumped for 29 and Hugo Rynsard-Perry batted sensibly for 13 but at 59.4. the home side had to buckle down as the Clacton South African spinner Stefanus Gericke proved a very capeable bowler. Tom Rash again batted well with 31 from 83 balls and Edwards helped with 23 to take the team insight of victory which was achieved with James McKinney and James Sturgeon at the crease giving Bury victory by 3 wickets.

Bury's 2nd XI fixture at Clacton was a victim of the rain but the 3rd XI game at home to Kelvedon and Feering went ahead despite a late start due to drizel, the visitors batted first scoring 188.9 M.Bridger top scoring with 57, Toby Nunn (3.33) and Stuart Nunn (3.29)and Sam Harrison (2.7) were the best bowlers. In what proved to be a close encounter Bury scored 178.9 with Ashley Smith (63) and Sam Harrison (34) top scoring it was a good cricket match and a close call.

Bury CC Ladies bounced back from defeat in their first game to a 3 wicket win over Frinton CC Ladies at home. Winning the toss Bury fielded first and despite some inconsistent bowling, the focus and sheer athleticism in the field put pressure on the Frinton batters who suffered four run outs and a middle order collapse.  An excellent spell from Angela Jiggins (4-0-12-2) and a stunning catch behind from keeper Cheryl Clayton ended the Frinton innings on 104 for 8. The Bury batters stayed ahead of the run rate required all the way and a final push from Cath White (13 not out) and the skipper Mary Munley saw Bury home with 5 balls and 4 wickets to spare.

On Sunday the 2nd team played at home to Elmswell on the main square Bury enjoyed the warm weather none more so than Raj with a superb 90, he was supported by Mark Nunn with 50 J.Garrod took 2.48. for the visitors.

In reply Elmswell were all out for 151.7. with Adam Kizis and Mark Nunn taking 2 wickets each.

Cecil and Larter players of the week

Phil Edwards, Tom Rash, Ashley Smith, Sam Harrison, Angela Jiggins and Raj.

Bury St Edmunds ladies team off the mark. Posted 21st June 2011...

A historic day for the club saw its first ever Ladies XI play a Two Counties Division 2 game away to Mistley CC. Bury Ladies had their first taste of opening a Twenty 20 innings and posted a cautious 64 for 6 with Alex Stanford the top scoring batter. In reply the more experienced Mistley side, veterans of the Beaumont Seymour League, began in aggressive style but lost an early wicket to a superb, one-handed caught and bowled by Esme Covington-Cross.  A useful second wicket from skipper Mary Munley could not prevent the home team from reaching the total needed with overs and wickets to spare. Mistley won by 8 wickets.

The Bury Ladies’ Captain explained, “Most of our ladies have never played before this season so we are pretty green but there is a great buzz about women’s cricket at the moment. We have developed a squad of 20 in six weeks. Mind you the free chocolate and strawberries may have had a part to play!”

Bury Ladies train on a Wednesday evening form 6.30pm at the Victory Ground and are happy for more willing learners to join them. Contact Mary Munley on 0794 1322 746. Directions on the website www.burystedmundscricketclubofficialsite.co.uk

Saturdays EAPL match between Cambridge Granta and Bury was abandoned after 29.2 overs the visitors Bury were well placed with a strong bowling attack having the home side at 96.3 with Justin Bishop taking 2 wickets and Mark Nunn the other.

Play at the Victory Ground was remarkable as rain clouds swept about but the interruptions were limited to allow both games to complete.

Bury's 2nd XI had Copford all out for 164 with a superb display by Tom Robotham (15.3.41.5) he was well supported by Javed Imam (11.1.47.3)

Copford bowled and fielded well as Bury lost 2 early wickets but Phil Godden (33) and a promising innings of 14 by Ollie Huggins was ended by an excellent slip catch, Ali Douglas batted with grit but ran out of partners being last out for 49 as the team were 29 runs short.

A different story on the second pitch as Maldon 2nds scored 201, they got off to a flying start with 70 off the first 10 overs but Bury gradually stemmed the tide, Toby Nunn taking 3.47 with good bowling from John Hayes (15.4.48.2) Andrew Green (9.1.23.1) and Ashley Smith with 4.35.

Bury batted with assurance despite losing Phil Scherb in a mix up but John Nicol scored 50 well supported by Toby Nunn (37) and Simon Aldous (33 not out) who used all his experience to guide the team home in the final over.

Sundays 1st XI match was cancelled Lakenheath failing to field a side.

Bury St Edmunds Victory Ground hosted a remarkable match on Saturday as the home side invited Vauxhall Mallards to bat in excellent conditions, the visitors were soon 2 wickets down but gradually built a competitive total Namibian professional Gerrie Snyman was the main stay with 109, James mckinney made the important break through just before lunch to dismiss Peter Free (35) after a 67 run partnership. Mallards looked set for a big total but 3 wickets fell for 3 runs to reduce them to 230.9. But a last wicket stand of 43 saw them all out for 273 in the final ball of the 66th over. The wickets were shared with 3 for Tom Rash and two for Tom Huggins, Mark Nunn and Phil Edwards who was working himself back to fitness.

Bury started briskly but lost Justin Bishop for 23, Scott Harvey (41) joined Huggins and again batted well as the pair added 107 the scoring rate accelerated as Simon Rees added 18 off 20 balls and Tom Rash who is developing into a genuine all round player with 27 off 30 balls.

Bury needed 79 off the last 10 overs and the key was Tom Huggins who not content with a century took the visitors attack apart spraying the balls to all parts of the ground as what looked like a task too far became reality.

28 were required off the last 3 overs and Toby Adams joined Huggins with 18 still needed, with Adams running like a hare Huggins kept the bowling, 9 were needed off the 54th and last over the first went for 2 runs the second ball a superb strait drive to the boundary as Bury then completed a superb win with just 2 balls to spare. Tom Huggins had been on the field every moment finishing on 156 not out with 19 x 4s from 165 balls in one of the best individual performances possible as he left the field to a standing ovation.

Bury's 2nd XI lost the toss and were asked to bat away to Kelveden& Feering. Bury started slowly and at 75.4 off 25 overs it looked like they would follow all the other teams batting first who have failed to win this season, however Ben Bellward (56) who has been a great addition this season was joined by Ali Douglas (70 not out) as a respectable total of 193.6 was posted.

Bury's tight bowling built pressure on the home team and some brilliant fielding by all the team gave Bury the ascendancy excellent bowling by Javed Imam (5.46) and Matt Prested (3.43) combined with two run outs achieved victory by 6 runs.

Kevin Dobson's 3rd Xi travelled to Witham with a master plan that failed to materialise the home side with 7 wins were always going to be difficult to counter but Bury made a slow start with useful contributions from Grisby (38) Viveck (39) and Dobson with 17 off 5 balls but 170 was not enough as Witham won with 8 overs to spare despite good bowling from Viveck, John Hayes and Frank Stennett.

Bury's 4th Xi were at home to a strong Worligton 2nds who posted 297.6 Dan Smailes bowled 2.28 and Ben Curran 2.43. Tim Coe rolled back the years with 38 helped by youngsters Tom Currey (34) and Matt Fildes (17) in a total of 170.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Huggins, Tom Rash, Ben Bellward, Ali Douglas and Javed Imam.

Next week we travel to Cambridge Granta in the EAPL, the 2nds are at home to Copford, the 3rds home to Malden 2nds, no 4th XI fixture.

Results for games 4/5th June. Posted 7th June 2011....

Bury's 1st XI travelled to Horsford in the EAPL and batted first on a wicket well suited to spin, Bury openers Tom Huggins and Justin Bishop added 100 for the first wicket as Huggins was out for 38, progress was slow on a turning wicket and excellent home fielding, Bishop achieved his second century of the season and Scott Harvey was not out 50, Simon Rees added 18 at a run a ball as the innings closed at 223.6.

The home team batted well to win with 3 overs to spare on a day when Bury did not play to their potential. Tom Huggins took 2. 60 off 18 overs.

The 2nd XI managed a good win at home to Coggershall batting first captain Nick Curran lead from the front as he Matt Prested, Ben Bellward and Stuart Nunn were all among the runs, the key innings was from Paul Douglas who batted at no 8 and scored 53 runs which took the total to 255.

Bury's bowling and fielding was excellent as Tom Robotham took 3 wickets supported by Prested and Javed with two each as the home side won by 53 runs.

Selection problems weakened both 3rd and 4th teams but the teams battled well. The 3rds chased leather as the old saying goes as Great Bromley batted well with both openers scoring centuries, Bury's young side kept going lead from the front by Kevin Dobson (98) with good support from Ash Smith and Jon Hayes but the total was well beyond them.

A similar tale as the 4th visited Woodbridge who had a batsman Nichols who scored 188 before being yorked by Tom Curran, Joe Tasker bowled well but it was Simon Aldous who managed two centuries 3.127 with the ball and 101 with the bat, credit must go to Alex Thurkettle who batted soundly for 24 as he and Aldous made a century partnership. The home side featured a young bowler Rob Marshall who looked good enough for a much higher level.

On Sunday two wins our Ist XI away to Edwardston scored 290.8. With James mckinney scoring 94 well supported by Tom Robotham (37) and Mark Nunn (38 not out)

In reply the home side made 187 with 2 wickets for Nunn and Matthew Fildes.

A weekend of much cricket!

I think the biggest story is Suffolk winning against Norfolk to set up a vital match next Sunday at Bury St Edmunds when Suffolk need to beat Cambridgeshire to qualify for the last 8 of the National One Day Minor Counties Knock Out Cup (won by Suffolk in August 2007)

The win at Norfolk was down to the Suffolk First innings total of 263 of which Bury players Tom Huggins who scored 78 and captain Justin Bishop who was 98 not out, Chris Warn our former wicket keeper added 39 off just 22 balls!

The Victory Ground  will host yet another big match maybe a story on its own!! The match commences at 11 am on Sunday June 5th.

Bury's proud unbeaten run in the EAPL came at the hands of Saffron Walden last season's runner up. It could of been so different because the young team failed to maintain the high standard of fielding that has been part of their early success. Bury won the toss and invited the visitors to bat and were soon making inroads on a damp surface, Justin Bishop bowling off a short run was outstanding (18.4.45.5) with good support from Tom Rash (26.3) with Saffron Walden at 54.7. Bury were well placed but the experienced Tim Smith batted well and along with Jacob Rogers rescued the innings with an 84 run stand, The visitors were all out for 180 with Smith not out on 76.Bury started well but lost Tom Huggins for 22 with the score on 39, Justin Bishop was out for 19 soon after and it was left to Simon Rees with an excellent 49 to bat positively. Darren Cousins who played for Bury a while back bowled well with 3 wickets as the home side were all out for 113.

Our 2nd XI  travelled to Little Barfield and scored 189.9. with good contributions from Nick Curran (50) and Ben Bellward (51). The home side started well but tidy bowling from Vivek and Sam Cordell kept the game in the balance, the home side ran out winners with just 10 balls to spare.

The 3rd XI also lost their unbeaten tag away to Mildenhall the home side scored 279.9 outstanding batting from Lou Hardy (55) and Joe Absolon (85) was the backbone of a good score. Andrew Green took 2 wickets, John Hayes 3 and Ashley Smith 2.and Bury replied with 226.7. Andrew Green top scored with an excellent 87 not out helped by Peter Thearle (45) and young Sam Harrison (27)

The 4th XI came up against a strong Eight Ash Green side that really should be in a higher league, we were all out for 79 with Cameron Crabtree top scoring with 23, the visitors knocked off the runs in style, the main aim is to introduce young players to senior cricket and some now starting will no doubt be the future of our club.

On Sunday we fielded 3 teams without 3 senior players who were playing for Suffolk.

The Sunday 1st XI visited Acton who totalled 217.7 in their 40 overs Chris Honeyball (3.47) Adam Blackmore (2.29) and Peter Thorne (2.38) being amongst the wickets. Bury batted sublimely with Thorne outstanding for 121 not out and Owen Grisby 46 not out. to win in 22 overs.

The Sunday 2nd XI beat Nowton with three ladies making their debuts at this level, we were put into bat and scored 202 with an outstanding contribution from Sathesh (109) he was well supported by Raj (43) and young Tom Curran (19) Nowton in reply were 10 runs short Sam Bowker opening the bowling took a wicket in her first over Marcus Price bowled well and despite needing 14 off the last over Raj held firm with just 3 runs and a wicket to win the game.

The Suffolk Cup played its early round on Sunday the group winners will contest the finals on Sunday August 28th. Having won this trophy for 5 of the last 6 years the team played Exning in an exciting contest the home side scored 150.7 off their 20 overs with Matt Prested taking 3.21. and Mark Nunn 2.23.  Bury replied with 149.9. just one run short of the home team Nunn making 61 and McKinney 31.

The second game in the 3 team league saw Bury score 210.6 with Mark Nunn scoring 83 and Stuart Nunn 48.

Good luck to Exning in what should be a very open finals day at our ground.

Monday saw the early round of the EAPL 20/20 Cambridge Granta beat Burwell and Bury scored 160 against Burwell who were declared the winners having scored 100.2 off 10 overs, the third game will now be carried forward to a future date when Bury can still qualify if they beat Granta on the best scoring rate all very complicated.

The Sunday match against Sudbury was abandoned due to rain Sudbury chose to play their Sri Lankan International professional Fernado who scored more than half their total of 226.5. Bury's reply reached 203.9. when the rain came down former Bury player Guy Robins taking 5 wickets as Peter Thearle (53) and Scott Stevenson (40) provided good resistance.

Bury St Edmunds unbeaten in the EAPL visited Sudbury to play the first league encounter since 1998. Bury captain Justin Bishop invited the hosts to bat and were soon making inroads into the Sudbury innings, Bishop opening the bowling took three of the top four which included Sri Lankan international Kandage Fernando for 5. It was a good all round bowling and fielding performance from the visitors with the wickets shared around as 7 bowlers were used, Mark Nunn and James mckinney taking 2 and a wicket each for Tom Rash and Tom Robotham. Sudbury's final pair added 32 before being all out for a disappointing 116.

The Bury reply started badly with Bishop and Huggins back in the pavilion for 19 runs but Simon Rees whose batting this season has been excellent took the game by the scruff of the neck, Tom Rash made 27 and Rees ended 73 not out in an innings with 12 fours and 2 sixes.

Bury's second team light on bowlers batted first against Stowmarket and totalled 232.6. Ali Douglas made 72, Simon Aldous 67 and Alex Price 29. Stowmarket battled well in reply Phil Douglas bowled well with 6.67 but lacked support as the visitors reached the target with 7 wickets down.

Disappointingly the Bury 3rd XI fixture was called off by Earls Colne at 9.30. On the morning of the match, this meant we could have played West Mersea having called the game off due earlier in the week due to so many players being either injured or involved with exams.

On Sunday we hosted Worlington in the Hunts Bats Division One the visitors batted first scoring 234.8 with G.Ford top scoring with 62 not out, Tom Rash took 3 wickets, James mckinney and Alex Blackmore 2.

Bury finished 16 runs short despite Rash (45) Mark Nunn (34) and Owen Grisby with 43.

The Sunday 2nd XI made the short trip to Nowton Paul Arnold batted very well for the home side make a century in a score of 240.7. The Bury reply started well with Peter Thearle in good form but after his dismissal Bury were never in the chase.

Bury's 1st XI entertained Norwich on Saturday and the development of young players was demonstrated by James Sturgeon who debuted being the 6th teenage player to represent the club at this level this season.

Bury batted first on a day when rain may play a part, Justin Bishop and Tom Huggins started in style adding 92 for the first wicket, Bishop was out for 36 but Toby Adams again played his part scoring 40, Huggins was out for an impressive 75 with the score on 182. Simon Rees played well for 33 as the home team amassed 244, with two overs lost to rain Bury failed by 6 runs to achieve maximum batting points. Norwich were reduced to 49.3 with Sturgeon taking 2 good catches off Mark Nunn,as Bury were in a strong position but Norfolk player Chris Borrett (74) added 117 for the 3rd wicket with the help of Ben Wright (61) Norwich were going well but wickets continued to fall including that of ex Norwich footballer Chris Sutton (21) in the end a draw was a fair result but the lost over might have enabled a home win as Norwich's last pair were at the wicket.

The 2nd XI travelled to Sudbury who scored 227.9 Matt Prested taking 6.61, Bury gave a spirited reply captain Phil Godden top scored with 53, Ali Douglas scored 45 and Prested was not out on 34 leaving the home side winners by 15 runs.

The 3rd XI had a most amazing afternoon that left skipper Dobbo in raptures, Harwich and Dovercourt batted well for 321.6. Bury lost Frank Stennett to injury and had to field with just 9 players as the visitors exploited the gaps. Guy Shalev taking 3.37.

The Bury reply was remarkable as Phil Scherb and Pete Thearle batted with gusto Scherb scored 123 and Thearle joined him in despatching the ball to all area's including the first XI ground, Thearle ended 123 not out as Bury chased down a score of 322.4 to retain their unbeaten record.

Our 4th XI played away to Braintree and recorded their first win, this young side was ably lead by Simon Aldous in a low scoring match. Braintree totalled 127 off 31 overs with Aldous taking 4.19. And Tom Curran 4.22. The highlight was a superb catch by Tom Currey.Braintree bowled well but youngsters Ben Curran (21) and Ben Whittaker (22) showed maturity beyond their tender years with help from Aldous and Chris Honeyball the win was achieved.

On Sunday our Ist XI visited Ampton & Culford and scored 250 Mark Nunn (68) Ollie Huggins (58) and Tom Rash (59) were all among the runs, the home side scored 180 and it was good to see ex Bury player Michael Lumley top score with 62 not out. Alex Blackmore, Owen Grisby and Alex Thurkettle each taking 2 wickets.

Bury Sunday 2nd XI played Elveden on the ground a week earlier that had a thousand spectators and two England players! Not quite the same standard but a match enjoyed by all taking part Bury scored 230 with Raj (46) Tom Curran (30) Chris Honeyball (35) scoring with but a star performance from Adam Kizis with 75. Elveden finished just 16 runs short with Sharmp Gupta taking 4 wickets.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Huggins, Matt Prested, Peter Thearle, Tom Scherb, Tom Curran and Adam Kizis.

The highlight of the weekend was the Sunday Clydesdale Bank Pro 40 First Class fixture hosted by The Unicorns against Essex which attracted a crowd of more than a 1,000 people to the Victory Ground, Bury St Edmunds there are many memorable moments Alistair Cook playing his first game after being named England's 50 over captain and batting with real style, Ravi Bopara batting showing why his is an England all round player, Tim Phillips 5 wicket haul and our club receiving so many good reports from the spectators complimenting us on the organisation, food and drink and general atmosphere. We also had a two minute feature of the game shown on `Sky Sports` on a number of occasions during the evening, this gave a very good idea of the atmosphere and many of our advertisment boards were on display to a national audience. The day would not have been such a success without the support of so many people associated with the club to them all we owe a great debt of gratitude.

On Saturday Bury won the toss at home to Burwell and under a cloudy sky invited the visitors to bat, after taking any early wicket the pitch proved as good as any possible in these dry times, Burwell batted their full allocation of 66 overs and accumulated 279.4. Tom Rash was the pick of the home attack with 18.3.72.4. Tom Huggins bowled a tight spell with his 18 overs yielding just 40 runs but the Bury attack missing three key pace men could not contain the Burwell batsman.

The Bury reply was dominated by Justin Bishop despite losing opening partner Tom Huggins for 35 with the score on 67 he batted sublimely for a superb 106 after Bishop's departure the teenage pair of Scott Harvey (42 not out) and Toby Adams (25 not out) batted with a good technique that bodes well for the future of both Bury and Suffolk cricket. The 54 overs were complete with the score at 251.3. 29 runs short but from 12 fewer overs as Bury remained unbeaten in the EAPL.

Our 2nd XI travelled to Mildenhall and batted first scoring 191.6. captain Nick Curran top scored with 50 and was well supported by Ali Douglas (45 not out) James Sturgeon (30) and Sam Cordell with 22 not out.

Mildenhall won the game with overs to spare at 192.4 with Javed taking 2 wickets.

Bury's 3rd XI kept up their 100% record with a home win against last years Two Counties Division 6 Champions Brightlingsea 2nds. Bury batted first and scored 266.8 from their 45 overs Ben Bellward maintained his impressive start with the club scoring 77, Andrew Green joining him with 65 and Kevin Dobson a cameo 57 not out.

For the visitors L. Homewood took 5.80 and J.Barry top scored with 89 as they were bowled out for 213. John Nicol taking 30.3. and Alex Thurkettle 2.27.

The home side made the runs with young Ben Curran taking a wicket.

  Results for games 23/24th April Posted 30th/1st April/May 2011........

Bury travelled to Swardston on Saturday and batted first against the team that won the EAPL in 2009 and were National 20/20 club champions in 2010. Losing both Tom Huggins and Justin Bishop with the score on 35 was a major setback but Simon Rees joined Scott Harvey and the two young Bury players played superbly to put on 100 runs for the 3rd wicket Rees (55) top scored and Harvey (53) made his second half century at the level. Toby Adams added 10 but it was left to some hard hitting from Tom Rash (38) to take the Bury score to 213.
Swardston's reply was solid at 77.1. with Peter Lambert going well it looked like the first defeat of the season was on the cards but good bowling from Tom Huggins (48.3) and Tom Rash (47.2) reduced the home side to 143.7 but Lambert (95) continued with the support of Eccells putting on 65 runs with Swardston on 208.7 just 6 runs were needed to win with 3 wickets remaining, a mere formality you might think but up stepped Mark Nunn to produce one of the most inspired bowling performances of his career 3 wickets in 6 balls the last two clean bowled as Bury snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. A superb all round team performance!

The good work was continued as both 2nd and 3rd XI's won at the Victory Ground. Nick Curran won the toss and invited Felixstowe to bat on a dry surface his bowling was lead by Tom Robotham (15.2.56.3) and was well supported by Stuart Nunn (47.3) as Felixstowe made 189.6. Bury 2nds reply was well made with runs from Olly Magnus (38) and young Joe Nicol (57) before Hugo Rynsard-Perry (47) and Ali Douglas (23) remained undefeated as Bury achieved 191.3 to win with 3 overs to spare.

Kevin Dodson's 3rd XI produced an early finish against Boxtead who were bowled out for just 91 they could not cope with an inspired bowling spell by Frank Stennett who took 6 wickets for 42 runs and Ashley Smith (17.4). Bury scored the runs with 29 not out from John Nicol, 21 from Ben Bellward and 25 not out from Vivek.

Bury's 4th XI visited Worlington a club strengthened by some new players this meant there 2nd XI was too strong for a Bury side establishing itself at this level. Worlington made 273 with 2 wickets for Aldous and Honeyball. Bury's reply started well with 66 for the first wicket with openers Crabtree (48) and Urquhart (32) playing well useful contributions were made by T.Curran (25) and Aldous 43 not out as Bury made 192.7.

On Sunday we visited Woolpit who scored 213.4. Tom Rash taking 3 wickets the Bury reply was going well with Rash making 30 and McKinney 28, Mark Nunn lead from the front with an excellent 84 but the home side bowled well restricting the reply to 180.8.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Mark Nunn, Scott Harvey, Simon Rees, Tom Rash, Joe Nicol, Frank Stennett and Cameron Crabtree.

Next week on Saturday  we are at home to Burwell in the EAPL, the 2nd XI travel to Mildenhall, the 3rds are at home to Brightlingsea 2nds and the 4th XI travel to Sudbourne Hall.

Results for games 23/24th April Posted 26th April 2011..........

Bury St Edmunds opened the new season on Saturday fielding 4 teams, with a further 2 teams playing on Sunday this is a proud record providing cricket for more than 50 players in the East Anglian Premier League, Two Counties and Hunts Bats Leagues.

Essex player Chris Wright was signed in time to make his debut against Great Witchingham. Bury included 4 teenagers Scott Harvey, Sasha Ward, Ethan Wright and Toby Adams the latter 3 all making their first appearance in what must be the youngest side the club has ever fielded in the EAPL.

The Victory Ground looked in great condition as the visitors won the toss and invited Bury to bat, the recent dry period ,meant the surface was hard and dry and runs would be at a premium soon Bury were 46.4. Toby Adams at the age of 16 joined Tom Huggins with the home side in trouble but batted with great maturity as Bury gradually built a score, Adams was dismissed for a splendid 40 from 108 balls having added 92, and it is rewarding to see a player who has progress through the clubs junior ranks show such promise. Tom Huggins scored 86 and was well supported by Chris Wright (24) and Tom Rash (15 not out) as the innings ended at 205.9. Great Witchingham made a slow start with good bowling from Chris Wright and Phil Edwards but Carl Rogers and James Spellman are quality players, Spellman (24)  was out first with the score on 63, Rogers made 51 and with Sean Arthurton going well the visitors looked like winning but Tom Huggins (17.3.64.5) is a very good spin bowler and a sharp catch by Justin Bishop saw Arthurton dismissed after which the Bury bowlers ensured the target was just too much leaving Great Witchingham on 197.7.
The only draw in the opening game of the EAPL season.

Bury's 2nd XI travelled to Worlington to play a side with many experienced players who are likely to win this league having been in the top three last season, Bury scored 157 Phil Godden top scored with 37, James Sturgeon made 33 and contributions from Olly Magnus (26) and Joe Nicol (23)

In reply Craig Eastlea who played EAPL cricket for Bury 3 years ago scored a brisk 66 as the home side won with time to spare.

Bury's 3rd XI returned to Division 5 and look much better equiped this time round batting first against Abberton 2nds we scored a massive 302.5 despite losing 2 early wickets, Pete Thearle scored 35 with all but a single in boundaries  Ben Bellward (80) and Stuart Nunn (79) batted very well with 39 not out from Ashley Smith. In reply a depleted Abberton side were all out for 109, Viveck taking 5.14 and Sam Cordell 3.14.

Our 4th XI made the journey to Eight Ash Green with a number of junior players making their senior debuts they will probably remember the match more for the heavy rain that interrupted play than the score the home side made 257.4 Sam Harrison and Guy Shalev bowled well and Joe Tasker made a great runout, our new side were dismissed for 104 with Alex Urqhart scoring 47, it is going to be a roller coaster time because we were playing the home clubs first team and were never going to compete on equal terms, the main aim is to develop young players and enjoy the game.

On Sunday we played our first ever game in the Hunts Bats Sunday League Division 1 batted first against Sudbury and reached 187.7. Tom Rash top scored with 41 and useful contributions from James McKinney (39) Joe Nicol (27) and James Sturgeon (20 not out)

Sudbury were all out for 137 with 3 wickets for Alex Blackmore and 2 for Scott Harvey.

The Sunday 2nd XI scored 176 against Elmswell with Pete Thearle smashing 96 and good support from Sam Harrison and Zac Bastiani.

Adam Kizis bowled well with 5.24. as Frank Stennetts team got off to a solid start as Elmswell were all out for 92.

Cecil and Larter players of the week. Tom Huggins, Toby Adams, Ben Bellward, Stuart Nunn, Viveck, Peter Thearle and Adam Kizis
