 Match reports 28th / 29th August. Posted 1st Sept 2010 .............

The wet conditions resulted in a game against Halstead where ball would always have the better of the bat, but none could have foreseen the remarkable game that resulted in the most tense of finishes imaginable.

Halstead batted first and did well to reach 40 for the loss of the first wicket, Simon Rees bowled well 17.5 7. 32. 3. and young Tom Robotham confirmed his progress by taking his first premier league wicket, Mark Nunn added 2 and Tom Huggins ended with 4.29 as Halstead posted 163.

Bury started badly losing Tom Huggins and Freddie Klokker early on but Nick Lee (36) was supported by Chris Warn as Bury looked in control, Simon Rees added 35 and at 141.6 just 23 were needed but handling pressure at this level on a turning pitch is never easy, Warn batted well but when he was out for 67 just 3 runs were required, Chris Lomas added 2 and the last wicket fell with the scores tied!

Bury had to be disappointed but the game provided all the excitement and tension that only cricket can provoke.

The 2nd XI game at Clacton was a victim of the weather but Kevin Dobson's 3rd XI made a significant step toward promotion with a comprehensive win at East Bergholt, with more than two teams of players unavailable he relied upon some of our promising young players, Simon Harrison, Oli Pledge and Cameron Crabtree all played their part as East Bergholt were bowled out for just 98 on a damp surface. Adam Dinsmore took 3.25 off 10 overs, Javed 4.23 and Kevin Dobson 2.26. off 5 his figures messed up by 3x6s in his last over.

Bury batted well with Phil Godden (24) and Phil Scherb putting on 59 for the first wicket, Scherb was out one short of a half century but Simon Aldous and Raj saw the team home with just 2 wickets down and 22 overs to spare.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Chris Warn, Simon Rees and Phil Scherb.

Greene King Suffolk Cup fimals day. Posted 17th Aug 2010 .............

Bury St Edmunds retain the Greene King Suffolk Cup.

On Sunday the Victory Ground hosted the finals of the Greene King Suffolk Cup the Twenty/20 formula proved popular as the 4 group winners battled for the honours, all the teams had coloured clothing as play commenced on both pitches at 11am.

Sudbury invited Bury to bat on the main square and openers Simon Rees (61)and Chris Warn (24) took full advantage of the fielding restrictions in the first 6 overs as they amassed 94 off the first 9 overs, Sudbury recovered very well to contain Bury to 154.4 off the 20 overs. Sudbury batted well with good contributions from D.Batch (56) and Coetzee (34) but when Stuart Nunn caught Coetzee in the deep Sudbury's task proved too much as they lost by 17 runs.

The second semi final proved just why this form of the game is so popular after Lowestoft had scored 130.6 with 32 from Sekhoto and 2 wickets each for Reynolds, Harrison and Hebditch, the Lakenheath reply reached a climax of needing 10 off the final over it became a cliff hanger as either side could win off the very last ball in the event Lakenheath whacked the delivery for the run required and triggered mass celebration amongst players, supporters and scorer! The leading run scorers were Greg Palmer (34) Shane Leech (31) and Danny Reynolds (29) Brice, Sekhoto and Hebditch each took 2 wickets.

The plate final was won by Sudbury who dismissed Lowestoft for 100 in reply Sudbury scored the runs with 2 wickets lost. B.Reece scoring 58 off just 24 balls.

The final of the Greene King Suffolk Cup had Warn (43)and Rees (45) again starting well with 85 off the first 9 overs Mark Nunn scored 23 in a total of 159.7. 2 wickets were shared by Paul Pallant, Gregory Palmer and Sam Bowers.

Lakenheath gave a spirited reply with several lusty blows Robbie Horrex lead the way with 55 from 46 balls over 30 runs were required off the last over as Simon Rees completed an outstanding day with 4.18 and Lakenheath finished on 134.6.

Umpires Colin Wells, John Stuck, Charles Rivell and Martin White all enjoyed the occasion as they received free beer, Adam Mansfield of Sudbury was awarded the wicket keeping prize and Simon Rees received both batting and bowling awards in what was a super days cricket for all involved. 1048 runs were scored in the day at almost 7 runs per over!

The new format Suffolk Cup has proved a great success and it is hoped to involve more teams in 2011.

Simon Edgar of Greene King presented the Suffolk cup to Bury captain Tom Huggins and the batting and bowling awards for the day to Simon Rees.

Saturday proved a highly successful day for Bury St Edmunds 1st XI recording the only win in the East Anglian Premier League.

Winning the toss past champions Vauxhall Mallards were invited to field and for a while Bury had to work hard, 17 year old Scott Harvey battled all morning against a hostile Norfolk team that included New Zealand test player James Marshall he was out just after lunch for 53, the afternoon session was a triumph for Nick Lee (114 not out) and Chris Warn who also finished not out on 99 from just 84 balls that included 10x4 and 6x6 a remarkable innings which gave Bury a huge boost.

Vauxhall Mallards started well and a draw looked the most likely outcome but 98.1 became 98.4 as Chris Warn superbly stumped Peter Free, Tom Rash has improved remarkably as a bowler this season and his 9.0.45.4 was complimented by Tom Huggins (62.3) and Chris Lomas 10.0.36.3 as Bury St Edmunds continued their fine recent form to climb the league.

It was a story of dropped catches as Bury's 2nd XI let Mildenhall score 205.6 despite Hugo Rynsard-Perry scoring a half century the home side were beaten by 6 runs.

The 3rd XI hosted league leaders Brightlingsea won the toss and put the visitors into bat Toby Nunn took an early wicket and good late bowling by Javed Iman15.1.41.5. ensured a total of 161.9.

Bury saved their worst batting performance of the season for this key game despite Owen Gisby and James Berry scoring 24 we were all out for 103 promotion is very much in our own hands as we reach the season's final stages.

On Sunday our 2nd team fielded first at Milden who posted 229.7 Bury had useful innings from Peter Thearle (46) and James Sturgeon (46) but finished 20 runs short.

With the 1st and 2nd XI sides falling victim to the weather our spotlight goes to Kevin Dobson's 3rd XI, relegated last season they have bounced back in style this season. On Saturday credit to Nacton who worked hard to ensure the game took place too often teams are content to cancel matches but Nacton should be congratulated, the home side won the toss on a damp green surface and Bury were asked to bat Phil Scherb (61) and Phil Godden (47) defied the conditions to score 94 for the first wicket with the experience of Simon Aldous and Ollie Magnus (42) to follow we reached 180 with 4 overs left a swashbuckling display by Peter Thearle and Ashley Smith ensured a further 40 runs were added giving a total of 220.5.

As Nacton batted the wicket remained difficult as Toby Nunn took two early wickets, it was an ex Bury player Craig Burrows that gave the home side hope as he scored a superb 81 that included 8 x 6's when Javed Imam took his wicket the match was effectively won. Toby Nunn took 4 wickets, Javed and Kevin Dobson 2 each as we won by 66 runs to make it 13 wins from 15 games.

On Sunday the 1st XI were put in by Hadleigh on a difficult track Bury scrapped to 182 thanks mainly to Tom Rash (97) with support from James Sturgeon (28). The Hadleigh reply hinged upon their Australian M.Innes but Tom Robotham took the key wicket amongst his 4 in total and Marcus Price chipped in with 3 as Hadleigh were all out for 155 in a close encounter.

The Sunday 2nd XI played an exciting match against Walsham le Willows who gained revenge for defeat earlier in the season, Bury lost the toss and batted first with a young team whose lack of experience saw players get going but fail to build an innings, Cameron Crabtree (29) and Alfie Sears (14) were supported by the senior players Raj (29) Frank Stennett (22) and Peter Thearle (36) a score of 182.7 proved short of what was needed as the visitors won with 183.9. Peter Thearle took 6.40 but it was an excellent innings of 74 by B. George that proved decisive.

Cecil and Larter players of the week  Phil Scherb, Toby Nunn, Tom Rash, Tom Robotham and Peter Thearle.

Next Saturday we are away to Vauxhall Mallards the 2nd XI are at home to Mildenhall 2nds, the 3rd XI host league leaders Brightlingsea.

On Sunday our Sunday 2nd XI travel to Milden while the main focus will be on the Greene King Suffolk Cup at the Victory Ground with a 20/20 format.

Bury will play Sudbury while the other semi final sees Lakenheath play Lowestoft at 11 am, after this the winners play for the Suffolk Cup and the losers for the Suffolk Plate in what promises to be a superb days cricket.

 Match reports 7 / 8th Aug. Posted 10th Aug 2010.............

The Victory Ground Bury St Edmunds hosted some superb cricket over the weekend.

On Saturday Bury played Norwich in the EAPL the visitors batted first and Oliver Higenbottan (50) and Harry Bush (49) batted well as the Bury bowlers fell below their recent high standards, Simon Rees (18.1.56.3) and Tom Huggins (17.4.45.3) were the pick of the home attack as Norwich slipped from 119.2. to 224 all out in 65.5 overs.

Bury had 3 overs and were 4.0. as the rain interrupted play resuming at 5pm there was it seemed little time to chase down a further 220 runs but Tom Huggins and Freddie Klokker batted with exceptional style and skill to put on 138 runs for the 2nd wicket Klokker was out for 72 but Tom Huggins continued to play a captains innings as the 5 wicket fell Bury needed 40 off 5 overs Ollie Huggins entered the arena to join his brother and smashed 20 runs off 11 balls as victory was achieved in the 38th over with 8 balls remaining, brother Tom remained defiant on 97 leading his team to a superb victory.

Bury's 2nd XI were rained off but the 3rds played Ipswich a side in good form after just 3 overs Vivek was taken to hospital with a damaged shoulder and the visitors raced to 55.1 off 10 overs but the spins twins of Javed ( 15.2.38.3) and Dobson (12.3.38.4) pulled the game back in Bury favour but the loss of 2 early wickets jolted the home side however Phil Scherb batted superbly for 88 and Alex Price (52 not out) was helped by James Lofts (20) as Bury won with 4 overs to spare to retain 2 nd place in the league and leave promotion very much in our own hands.

On Sunday the Victory Ground hosted the finals of the East Anglian Premier League's 20/20 competition, Bury played Cambridge Granta in the semi final of the southern group. Bury batted first and scored 165 a decent total in this form of the game, key contributions came from Tom Huggins (24) Pete Turnbull (20) Freddie Klokker (23) Scott Harvey (27) and Tom Rash (22). Granta started well and thanks to Park (39) and Hesketh (65) looked set for victory at 132.3 in the 16th over but there followed one of the most amazing cricketing stories that this old ground has witnessed, Tom Huggins last ball of his 3rd over saw Tom Rash make a great running catch, the next over started with Chris Warn making a brilliant stumping and the second ball was smacked hard to long on from where Freddie Klokker ran in dived full length to take a catch unlikely to be ever bettered, most lined up thinking the next was a hat rick ball which Tom Huggins duly bowled the stumps down, to add to the incredible scenario Simon Rees swooped to catch the fourth ball to provide the script of Victory Ground folklore 5 wickets in 5 balls (is their a cricketing term for such a feat? has it ever been done at this level before? Granta ended on 152.9. Tom Huggins returned figures of 4.0.20.6. and Bury were in the final of the EAPL 20/20

As often happens after such a high we could not repeat the heroics of the first match as we took the field for the final against Norfolk 20/20 winners Swardston whose captain Thomas blasted the ball to all area's with 62 off 34 balls, this time the catches were spilled and a score of 167.6 was posted Rees took 3 wickets and Tom Huggins 2. The Bury reply never got going despite Chris Warn batting well for 26 not out and 17 year old Scott Harvey making 19, after the semi final this was always going to be a big call against fresh opponents and Bury were all out for 94.

While the 20/20 was taking place Bury's Sunday 1st played Withersfield aiming to retain the only 100% record in the Hunts Bats League. The visitors bowled first and soon had Bury in trouble some poor shots and good bowling saw Bury at 70.5 Peter Theale scored 37 and Owen Grisby battled for 28 as Bury were all out for 161.

Withersfield started well with Farrant scoring 38 and for a while they looked in command but Marcus Price took 5 wickets for 11 runs as the visitors collapsed to 108 all out.

Last Tuesday Bury St Edmunds ensured they reached the finals of this year Suffolk Cup this year it is a 20/20 format Holywells bowled well but Richard Pineo cracked the ball to all parts of the ground for 86 out of a total of 179. Holywells batted manfully but the bowling of Stuart Nunn with 6.12 had them all-out for 70.

Ipswich and East Suffolk conceded their Thursday game due to lack of players and Bury were assured of a place in the finals to be played at the Victory Ground on Sunday August 22nd with a 11am start.

Cecil and Larter players of the week Tom Huggins x 2, Freddie Klokker, Phil Sherb, Marcus Price, Richard Pineo and Stuart Nunn.

Bury St Edmunds travelled to Swardston to play in dry conditions and on a well worn pitch ideal for the home side spin attack, Bury batted first and were in a good position at lunch with Tom Huggins and Chris Warn going well. Warn made 31 and Huggins 72 before a bad mix up saw him run out, the spin of George Walker ( Ex Leicestershire) and Zimbabwean international Richard Simms proved difficult to counter as the Bury tail failed to build on the early basis and were all out for 181.

Swardston were in total control at 94.1. but there followed a spirited and determined fight back as wickets fell at regular intervals Simon Rees bowled very well returning figures of 15.3.47.4. this included Richard Simms for 73 and Tom Rash took 2.53 on a pitch with little help to them, Tom Huggins bowled 16 overs taking 1.37.

Mark Nunn scored 53 and Viveck had a late cameo but Bury were all out for 153.

The 3rd XI played at home to Elmstead Grasshoppers mindful that the ground had been flooded by a storm on Thursday evening, we lost the toss and were asked to bat, Phil Scherb scored a good 58 and Ashley Smith remained 54 not out as the total of 186 this was well below our normal score. Clearly we needed to bowl well and this was the case as from the first ball of the innings young Alfie Sears dived to take a superb catch off the bowling of Stefan Viljoen. Frank Stennett bowled a good spell 15.6.48.3 and Javed 15.2.50.1 but it was the evergreen Kevin Dobson who took 3.26 off just 7 overs that saw Bury home to victory by 14 runs.
