Bury Ladies vs Frintion

World Cup winner gives girls from Bury St Edmunds the chance to shine at cricket

After a series win against New Zealand, England’s Lydia Greenway visited Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club on 6th August 2010 to provide expert coaching and inspiration for aspiring young cricketers.

The camp, run by Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club with the assistance of Chance to Shine supported by Brit Insurance and the England and Wales Cricket Board is part of a nationwide road show that will see England’s top female cricketers visiting clubs supporting Women and Girls cricket around the country.

The camp had a fantastic turn out of 22 girls, whilst Lydia Greenway was on hand throughout to offer tips on batting, bowling and fielding, and to talk about her experiences of international cricket.

Ali Whittaker, BSECC Junior Coordinator said:“it was truly inspirational to have an international player come and visit the club. Lydia was fantastic and gave our young cricketers a real insight into her cricketing career and also passed on some great tips. We’re very grateful for her visit and hope she will come back some time soon!”

Lydia stayed to present trophies at our first Girls End of Seasons Presentations. These were to reward the effort and dedication that players had made throughout the season playing in the local U15s and U13s Lady Taverners Competitions.

Bury Cricket Club is also running a Womens cricket team next year. Any women or girls

interested in playing can check our web site www.burystedmundscricketclubofficialsite.co.uk

Lady Taverners Match Report

A busy week for Bury girls with two games played on fine summer evenings.

Monday - Bury U13s vs. Achilles Away

The U13 travelled to Ipswich for their first game of the season to play Achilles CC. A very friendly team coached by Eddie gave us a good close game as they won by only 7 runs. Achilles batted first and scored 87 with star batter Plum top scoring with 26 and retiring. Skipper Esme led from the front as our most effective bowler with three overs, 1 maiden over and 1 wicket maiden over. After a wobbly start Alex bowled very economically and Zoe, Rosie H and Abi all made valiant efforts to support the team. Evie, Gemma and Rosie A were all very active in the field stopping balls on what was quite a small boundary and a very bobbly outfield.

Hannah was the backbone of the batting lasting 10 overs before she was unfortunately out. Evie had a very unlucky run out when she slipped and couldn’t get back in. Gemma looked very confident in her first game and batted for 7 overs and hit her first boundary. Rosie H and Alex played positively in the last couple of overs but the wayward bowling meant is was very difficult to hit the wides and no balls. So finishing on 80 runs was a great effort rewarded with mini jelly babies!

Thursday- Bury U15s vs, Copdock Home

The U15s had a return home game against Copdock. This was a far more competitive encounter but as we only had seven players it was always going to be a difficult challenge. In fact the Bury team was probably younger on average than our U13s team on Monday. Batting first Pippa was unlucky to be facing a county U15 player who bowled extremely accurately and knocked over Pippa’s stumps all too soon. Abi at the other end valiantly defended her wicket and in fact lasted 5 overs before being also bowled. Alba also managed to tough it out against the onslaught of quick bowlers for three overs. Jade steadied the innings with a magnificent 19 not out including three fours. Hannah struggled to score the boundaries she had on Monday and was out to another of their county bowlers. Skipper Lottie supported Jade to the end making sure Bury batted all the overs and reached a total of 40. This was a really good total compared to the 25 for 3 wickets we scored last time at Copdock.

Everyone had a go at bowling except Hannah as wicket keeper. Copdock elected to play their best batters up front including three of the county U15 ’s best players.  But Pippa and Esme did well with three economical overs each. Abi bowled one over giving away few runs and Lottie recovered from a first wobbly over to bowl an excellent second over. The fielding was tough as we only had seven but we made up for lack of numbers with brave effort. Abi stopped a cannonball along the ground to prevent four runs and Alba made the most awesome “catch that nearly was” from a sky high ball. Copdock finished on 102.

Well done girls for playing two very good games and for being a very professional and friendly team.

I hope you all enjoyed it and feel more confident for the experience.
